We are all different.
Some of us wake up and make a pot of tea, some of us make a cup of coffee and some of us make nothing at all. Some of us are morning birds with a schedule filled with 8 a.m.'s, and some of us are night owls and don't get out of bed until noon. Some of us are extroverted and make it a goal to make a new friend every day, and some of us are introverted and can't wait to get home and binge-watch our favorite shows.
However, the one thing nearly every person has in common is a love for music. Whether it's classical jazz, rap, rock, EDM, pop or whatever your Spotify has on deck--we all have that song or two that can instantly make our day or remind us of a beautiful memory.
That's why I truly believe that music is the best medicine. In a time when the world has fallen victim to so much hate and tragedy, a familiar melody can help us heal and connect us when we need it the most. Whether it's the lyrics that touch our souls or simply the sound, music is the fastest way for us to find inner peace and escape reality--even if it's just for a moment.
This past weekend, I attended a music festival in which artists from every genre were there to represent their passions for music. It was a 4-day long festival, and I've never met so many friendly people in my life. I was attending solo to cover the festival for a music publication I write for, so I was very intimidated to go into such a massive experience alone.
Right away, my worries subsided. As soon as I sent up my tent for the weekend and headed into the venue, I could feel the love as if it was a tangible substance floating in the air. I had my camera with me, and I was trying to capture the feeling into a photo--which was extremely hard to do. People would stop me to pose for a pic, but they weren't just hoping to get a great shot for social media--they wanted to know my story as well.
They would ask me where I was from, how I was enjoying my time and how long I had been doing photography. They wanted to make a connection with a complete stranger out of pure kindness and curiosity. If everyone in the world did this, maybe the world wouldn't have become such a scary place at times. Maybe if we took this initiative to get to know those around us and their stories, there would be no hate to act upon.
Everyone at the festival was completely different. There were young people, old people, people of every race and heritage, people who came in groups, couples or alone, people from all over the country and even the globe! But everyone was there for one reason: the music.
Not everyone was there to see the same artists or hear the same genre, of course. But everyone was there to vibe with the music and make new memories. It truly was healing in a time when everyone in the country was feeling hurt.
Music is so powerful, and I didn't realize how powerful until this past weekend. Music makes people laugh, dance, cry, sing, scream and so much more. It's a mammoth outlet for creativity, and most importantly, for love.
When your day isn't going the way you planned or you're having a hard time overcoming something in your life, turn up the music. Grab someone and dance or sing or just listen with them. Or just put some headphones in and have a moment to yourself.
I promise the melody will heal you.
