I often have people come up to me asking me to share my music with them. It's something that I take great pride in because music to me is a whole language itself.
I've probably changed my music taste 4 times in my whole life. Starting with the infamous Disney Channel artists like R5, The Jonas Brothers, Bella Thorne and Zendeya, and even Selena Gomez when she was first making it big. That was all I would listen to. In fact, I stayed on the phone for two hours once just so I could be on the Disney Channel Radio and tell them to play the new R5 Song (yes, my obsession with R5 was quite big). These artists were basically my music taste up to my 7th grade year.
Then things took a whole 360 and I ended up finding this lovely band called Hot Chelle Rae. My music was only Hot Chelle Rae in 7th grade. To be honest, they are a pretty great band and I would still listen to them without skipping if they came on my playlist. You can never go wrong with a nice "Tonight, Tonight," the most iconic teenage anthem of 2011.
In 8th grade, I had my first dose into the alternative/emo music by finding Fall Out Boy. My best friend and I probably listened to "My Songs Know What You Did in The Dark" over 20 times in one day. In my defense, it is an actual bop. Then I dove a little deeper and found the iconic, the legendary, My Chemical Romance. The emo ship had left the station and the only passenger was me. I can safely say I know every single word to every My Chemical Romance song out there and I don't know if I should be proud of that or ashamed (a bit of both I guess). They are actually a great band, it's just was not the best idea to make my username "black_parade201" on every single social media platform that I had. Every time someone asks for my Snapchat I have to explain to them why.
After my little emo phase (which included fedoras and lots of chokers) I discovered less scary bands that is where I land today. My favorite band at the moment is a tie between AJR and Next Door Cinema Club. I also listen to less heavy music and where color now so I guess I am no longer emo (though I do love a good Black Parade or Helena here and there).
However, something I learned during my many faces is how much music changes you. That right there is the reason why you should listen to music. When I listen to music I like to feel it. I think that the person singing is a friend of mine trying to have a conversation. I know it sounds stupid but hear me out. When you think about the artists singing in your ear as your friend, you connect more with the song.
Listening to music should be everyone's priority, even if their music taste is like mine, changing volatile. It's easy to get lost in the chaos that is life. It is easy to forget how to live in the moment. Listening to music can bring all those little moments back. Connect with songs, make monthly playlists, listen to the radio if you even have to. Trust me, it's worth it.
Why music? well why not :)
