Why I Don't Regret Going Out Of State For College

I love my decision.

Why I Don't Regret Going Out Of State For College

There are many different criteria one must assess when choosing where they want to go to college. Many people have thoughts regarding money, major, sports, etc. For me, one of the largest contributors to the school I chose was the location.

I attend school in Chicago, which is over 250 miles away from my suburban, Michigan home. In retrospect, this is not even that far from my home; I know so many people that go farther for their education. Yet, so many people will still ask, "Why Chicago?" or "Why are you going so far?" Spoiler alert: it is not because of you. It is not for any specific reason besides the fact that I wanted a change.

I wanted to have new experiences in an environment that is totally different from what I grew up around.

I have never moved in my entire life, so I wanted to change things up. I was ready to take that leap finally. Sure, I miss my friends and my family at times, but I will never regret my decision to move to a different state for school. Chicago is breathtaking and lively. I get the pleasure of studying in one of the largest cities in the United States. I have the ability to make connections and gain internships that I probably would not have if I stayed in state.

More than just school though, I moved because there is so much entertainment, art, and culture to keep me occupied. Chicago is my opportunity to experience the world while I am still in school. DePaul University, the college I attend, has the cheesiest slogan that I absolutely love; Chicago is our classroom. Overused and definitely a little corny, but it is absolutely true. How many colleges make freshmen take a mandatory class that explores the city they are based in? DePaul and Chicago, although many miles away from the people I love, has transformed into my home for now.

I did not move because I hate my family or because I want to incur student loan debt.

I moved because I knew I needed something more in my life, and I was ready to make a change. So, to answer the question, "Why did you move so far?" I guess it's just because I wanted to do something for myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
