What is minimalism? Well, it really depends on who you're asking. According to vocabulary.com, when you call a person a minimalist, you're describing their interest in keeping things very simple. A minimalist prefers the minimal amount or degree of something. By definition, being a minimalist means living simply as possible.
For some individuals, minimalism means owning less than 100 things, not owning a TV, car, or house. Now, this is extremely hard for most of us. For some, being a minimalist is simply getting rid of material items that you don't need. To me, being a minimalist is living without having major attachment to material items.
Why is striving to be a minimalist a good thing? Because in the world we live in there are people who need things that we do have, but don't need. There's no reason to own things that truly have no true value to us, but have all the value in the world to someone else.
Getting rid of that sweater you haven't worn in years could make someones day. No one is going to notice if you wear the same black leggings over and over. Minimizing your closet can be a good thing for you and for others. Donating your old phones that sit around could be great for someone who needs it more than you. Say goodbye to the junk drawer!
I'm not saying we should get rid of all our items and sell our homes to live in a tiny house, but I don't think it's outrageous to be able to work towards a life like this. Striving to live simply can help us in many ways. It reduces the stress and unneeded clutter in our lives.
It's obviously less expensive and more sustainable. It gives you more time and money to DO things that make you happy. Everyone has their own idea of the minimalist lifestyle, but it all comes down to finding simplicity, finding what makes you happy, and not adapting to the crazy consumer mindset everyone seems to have adopted these days.
Here's another perspective, the things we have here on earth don't matter, it's the things we DO that matter. You can have all the things in the world, but that doesn't help you get to heaven. Traveling, increasing your cultural knowledge, and helping others is much more likely to get you where you want to be both on earth and after.
I don't consider myself a minimalist, but it is something I want to be one day. I have lived my whole life without a TV in my room and I never plan on purchasing a TV or cable. I plan to live simply to reduce stress, become more organized, increase focus, and think more clearly. I do not want to own so much that I can not live.
I want to see the world in the most peaceful way possible. With the minimalist lifestyle, this will be possible. This crazy idea of owning few items to DO many big things, isn't so crazy after all. You can be MORE with LESS.
"Minimalism is the intentional promotion of the things we most value and the removal of anything that distracts us from it" - Joshua Becker
