Living overseas can be a scary thought, but when you think about it, it really isn't. There are so many benefits to living overseas alone! You can meet so many new friends and experience a totally different culture's lifestyle. Such an experience is truly one that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. For me, I am currently sharing an apartment with a good friend of mine that I met, and I must say, this is a totally new experience that I will never forget (Also because of the Level 4 Typhoon that's currently above me as I am writing this article.) The people are always nice, and I am sure that wherever you may be, you will be welcomed into their society.
Living in a different country can bring many wonders, but also it can bring stress and hardship. For example, I am currently living in Taiwan, where there are at least five typhoons per year! The citizens here, however, just take this in stride as part of their daily lifestyle, while I am frantically trying to make sure that I have enough food to last for a few days and that I am safe inside. This was quite amusing, especially to my friend that I was living with. Additionally, the weather is totally different from the US. Every day, one can expect rain in the afternoon, and occasionally, an earthquake. To experience an earthquake is one thing, but to sit in the middle of a hurricane is even scarier.
I've met so many people in my journey through the camp, and I've become good friends with most of them. Most of them are in college, but they all are still great people to get to know. I've never really experienced living alone, but they have all helped me to adapt to this new lifestyle. Here's a tip: If you go overseas and can speak that country's native language well enough, you will be quite popular with everyone, including those of the opposite gender! I'm not kidding at all about that!
My job in the summer camp is to teach underprivileged children living in the mountains English and the American Culture. The area is quite dismal and underwhelming, especially for someone who is used to clean living quarters. Thus I understand that I was lucky to be born into a fortunate life. As a result I feel the need to help others, and thus I will try my best to teach the children all I know about a better life.
The thought of living in another country is always a scary thought, but the experience is the total package! I got to experience every single aspect of living by yourself, and also the culture and lifestyle of the Taiwanese! I truly hope that everyone someday heads out of a trip by themselves and experience the true world for their own eyes to see! It is a marvel for all, and you will not regret a single moment of this!
