I know what you’re thinking: you like those stupid reality shows like "Keeping Up with the Kardashians", "Teen Mom", "Real Housewives" and "The Real World"? Nope, not true. Though I don’t mind watching these shows whenever they’re on, I prefer the gameshow-type reality shows, like "Big Brother", "Survivor" and "The Amazing Race."
This genre of TV was always my favorite. I never really liked any of the dramas and sitcoms, like "Grey’s Anatomy" or "Modern Family" that everyone obsessed about. Of course, I watched Disney Channel when I was younger, and I do watch a handful of scripted shows, but none of them compare to how much I love the other type of reality shows.
Whenever I tell people that I don’t have Netflix because my favorite type of TV show isn’t on there, they always ask me what my favorite shows are. When I say "Survivor" and "Big Brother", I usually get, “Oh, I’ve seen that before” or “I used to watch that with my family when I was younger” or “My grandma loves that show.” She has every reason to!
Why do I love these shows so much? Well, my main reason is that you get to choose someone to root for. For those of you know don’t know, "Survivor", "Big Brother" and "The Amazing Race" cast people from all over the country and they compete week-to-week to survive elimination. Although each show’s premise is different, the main goal is to avoid elimination and be the last one standing to win a sum of money. So early on into each season, you pick your favorites and root for them to win the whole thing. Sure, you may say that you could have a favorite character in a drama or sitcom and root for that character, but it’s different when it’s real people. You actually feel bad when they go home.
Another thing that I love is that you can start watching from any season and go back to watch them sporadically. "Survivor" is currently on its 34th season, and since every season has different people, you can begin watching it right now. If you like it, you can also go back and watch just the 16th season, for example. Unlike dramas, you don’t have to start from the first episode of the first season and binge watch the entire show to feel satisfied with the ending.
Another great thing that these shows do is "all-star seasons." Your favorites from different seasons come back and you get to root for them all over again, hoping for a better second chance if they fell short their first time around.
However, the absolute No. 1 reason why I love to watch these shows is that it gives you something to hope for. If you love the shows and hope to live in the "Big Brother" house over the summer, it’s possible. It’s unlikely that someone from "How I Met Your Mother", when it aired, would come and knock on your door to ask you to star in an episode. You probably won’t be solving any math problems with Sheldon Cooper from "The Big Bang Theory." However, it is possible to be on one of the reality shows. Normal, everyday people are cast to be on the show, so it gives you something to strive for.
So, if you haven’t seen any of these shows, you should absolutely watch them. "Big Brother" starts back up again this summer, "The Amazing Race" starts this Thursday and "Survivor" is in the middle of the season, but you can go back and watch the first few episodes to get all caught up! Maybe you’ll start to like my favorite genre!
