I have been seeing lots of posts lately that are shaming not-so-creative Halloween costumes. And those posts would include, for example, a picture of a person in a pizza costume stop wearing a pizza costume, it’s so boring. And frankly, I am offended. Not because one of my costume this year was on the list (maybe a little bit) but shaming people for their costume is not what Halloween is about.

Yes, it is always nice to come up with creative ideas and fun things to be on Halloween. If you do that, I applaud you for it. I can always appreciate a nice and fun and creative costume. But it is Halloween and you are supposed to be something or someone that is not yourself, and frankly what hasn’t been done for Halloween? I am sure not much is truly original in this time and age. Halloween is not an originality contest. It is however, a chance to live in other’s skin for a bit and have fun.

There are lots of reasons why people don’t have a creative Halloween costumes. First, it takes a lot of time and creativity and money to come up with things like that. And not everyone has all the privilege to do so. Have you seen how expensive Halloween costumes are? They are not cheap. And for poor college student like me and my friends, we always find something that is cheap and useful (meaning that we can either use it for another costume next year or we can wear it on a regular school day) and things like that almost always falls under the “basic and uncreative costume” category. Like animal, aliens, or superheroes. Also, as a very busy college student, I don’t have time nor the energy to DIY or come up with creative things. I am busy enough as it is, I don’t want Halloween to be an add on stress. I just want to put on something that is easy and have fun.

Also, who says that a costume that is being labeled as basic can’t be creative. Take an alien costume as an example, there are so many ways to do different make up for it, different tops and bottoms and shoes. There are endless possibilities. Everyone does it differently. So, what the theme is very popular. What is wrong with choosing a theme that is popular? There is a reason it is popular. And popular makes the costumes not creative but what is wrong with being not creative.

Halloween is about having fun. For the people who are going around and labeling costumes, let the people have fun. And for people that has a costume that is being labeled basic or not creative, do not care about what others say. Do you and have fun. Because Halloween is about spookiness and happiness that nobody can take that away from you.
