It was a dark winter's night in the early 2000's and I was being a brat to my parents so they decided to punish me. Instead of just sending me to my room, my mom gave me the option of either being sent to my room early or watching a scary movie.
Me being the movie lover I am/was I figured "Why not?" I mean what was the worst that could happen? My mom then pulled out IT (1990) and from that day on I've been horrified of clowns.
That being said I felt the need to give credit where credit is due: IT (2017) was a great movie. I never thought I would actually say that but it was a well-made movie and its something that people should see.
Let me be clear though, I don't think IT was good because it was scary, instead, I thought it was good because of the story that's told about friendship. I would describe this movie as more of a coming-of-age film with some horror scenes.
Don't get me wrong, the movie was terrifying and Bill Skarsgård totally owned the part. But if you take out the scenes starring Bill as Pennywise, you get the story of a group of "losers" who find out they are stronger together than alone.
IT (2017) succeeds in making the characters relatable and actual human beings instead of props in a horror movie. Each character has their own stories and their own personality. It's almost refreshing to have a good horror movie that tells a story about real people instead of the same scary movie with a different scary monster that never lives up to the hype it makes for itself.
My official recommendation is to go out and see this movie as soon as possible. Coming from someone with coulrophobia, you should take this seriously.
I promise in the end you won't even be thinking about the clown, you'll be focused on the stories of each of the Loser's Club.
