"You're so basic," has become a commonly thrown about insult. But, if you think about it...maybe being 'basic' is not all that bad. Here are some reasons why you should not be ashamed to be basic. Own it!

  1. Acid is bad for you. I’m not talking LSD tabs here, I’m talking too much lemonade and pickled veggies. Some things just doesn't sit well in the stomach. Balance is key, but the real goal should be a pH of 14.
  2. There’s nothing to lose. No, seriously. Have you ever looked at the lifestyles of your average friend and realized how laid back and carefree they really are? Here’s to the “cheap thrills”. The love for macchiatos on a gloomy wednesday morning. The need for a peppermint facial from Lush coupled with casual girl talk. The mandatory glass of whipped cream flavored nothings. What’s there to lose when little things are more treasured
  3. It’s okay to fail. Being basic means there is no stifling pressure to succeed, which really lets your brain be a sponge for growing pains. Allowing failure to be a part of her life, an average person can grow to learn new things about herself, fix the problems that she meets head on, and figure out what works and what doesn't, all by being open to a knock to the ground every once in awhile.
  4. Life has meaning. Why be the creme of the crop when you can be the norm. Norm means never really delving past the usual. Discipline, in a sense is “exercised” norm. If watching Netflix at 9 pm every friday night is your norm, then stick to it! This fosters a set schedule and allows you to develop a sense of self. Who are you? The Who’s Bob Oriley didn’t find himself doing exasperatingly uncommon out of the box things. Every successful person has worked at their schedule in such a way that they are able to maximize their use of 24 hours to fit their needs -- whatever they may be. Making time for basic activity is not only healthy but important in maintaining a functioning disciplined life.
  5. Who cares? Don't take this life thing too seriously. A study has proved that 98% of the people you interact with care more about their own problems than the way they perceive you as a person. Get off the computer, log out of Instagram. Lose your facebook. Open your window and breathe in every second of the life you have because, guess what-- we all have to die someday.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
