How often have you gone to the movies by yourself? How often have you gone out to eat by yourself? I believe that most people will answer that they have not gone out alone and this is because the truth is, we are afraid of being alone.
Our society demands this constant connection and awareness of one another because of social media and we find comfort in having company. A physical presence fills up the emptiness as we assume that our emptiness comes from an empty presence of a physical person.
Many will say that making friends is a big part of their college experience. It's a common answer when a student is asked about what they are most excited for in college. While building relationships and friendships is crucial, we often forget about ourselves in the process as we are so fixated on making new relationships.
Alone time is different from loneliness. The connotation is different as well as the purpose behind it. In our fast-paced, hustling, and "on the grind" society, 'me-time' is nonsense. There is always something to do, someone to meet, and someplace to be. But that is exactly why we need this alone time!
Time alone leads to a new discovery of oneself. If you haven't figured it out, humans are all inconsistent. We change our minds in a blink of an eye and we ourselves change as we grow. When we take time to ourselves, we get a chance to pause and reflect. During this time, we learn about what we like, what we dislike, what we enjoy, and who we are.
If you are an introvert, alone time is extremely precious to you. Without it, you will feel drained and dead. There is a time to recharge after you have socialized for awhile and this is when you build up your energy again. It is needed for an introverted person, but it doesn't mean that extroverts don't need alone time as well.
The fact is that alone time is necessary and needed for every human being. Taking time to think back with no outside influence will help in developing a clearer understanding of yourself and your thoughts.
It's important that we all take care of ourselves and our mental health. Taking this step of spending alone time, whether it's watching a movie by yourself, eating by yourself, or simply going for a walk by yourself, there are many benefits that come to your mind and your heart.
Alone time is important and there is no shame in spending a whole day by yourself.
