There are two types of people in the world: The first type is the group of people who religiously use this new slang term "adulting" and the second type are normal human beings. According to the website Urban Dictionary adulting is described as doing "grown up things and hold responsibilities such as, a 9-5 job, a mortgage/rent, a car payment, or anything else that makes one think of grown-ups." But people my age don't typically use it in this context.
So pretty much, being a normally functioning member of society qualifies as "adulting". If you're like me, you agree that this is the most annoying social media trend since planking.
Making yourself a sandwich for your lunch break during your summer job is not "adulting", it's making your lunch.
Cleaning out your car is not adulting, it's being a clean person.
Doing more than sitting on your ass all day is not adulting, it's being a productive person.
Having a few drinks with dinner as opposed to getting belligerently drunk is not adulting, it's, again, just being a normal person.
I'm happy that people my age are holding age appropriate responsibilities, but you don't deserve much more than a pat on the back and the fact that my generation has created a tacky verb to describe these basic responsibilities absolutely disgusts me.
Congratulations for paying your bills on time and eating more than frozen dinners every night, but honestly no one cares and no one is proud of you for it.
This social media trend absolutely epitomizes the perception that millennials are entitled and clueless members of society, whether this perception is true or not. If you're mature enough to have a full-time job and a mortgage, I sincerely hope that you're mature enough to realize that this is a normal part of life and doesn't warrant annoying posts about how "#adulting" is hard.
So next time you have that tweet about your daily routine constituting "adulting", please remember that if you are using this term, you are anything but mature.
