So in case you haven't heard, people are clamoring on Netflix to watch "To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You" if they haven't already seen it.
I finally had time after Valentine's Day to watch the sequel of 2018's "To All the Boys I've Loved Before," a movie based on the books by Jenny Han. There are a couple of moments that left me questioning Lara Jean's decisions, but I enjoyed it anyways.
Like hearty comfort food, high school movies are a guilty pleasure of mine. When done right, like the "To All the Boys" movies and 2019's "Booksmart," I love watching the ups and downs of these young adults' lives. But ... I'm 24 years old. So why do I want to watch these movies?
Arguably, high school is simpler than being an adult. Yes, there is insane pressure to fit into a mold or fulfill expectations that people set for teenagers. Most young adults are just trying to figure out who they are and what they want to do let alone survive the unforgiving landscape that is high school.
That being said, it's so easy to take time spent with friends for granted. As adults, friends have extremely different schedules from work and other responsibilities. So seeing besties every day is such a luxury that most adults are probably jealous of. Also ... rent and bills. Need I say more?
High school isn't high school without a huge crush, that one mean kid and the drama of complicated relationships. Most if not all high schoolers have stared longingly at someone else across the halls, and seeing lovestruck kids on-screen makes viewers understand the characters' emotions. But some of the most relatable, funny and awkward moments come from the parents in these movies.
When it comes down to it, high school dramas are as successful as they are because of nostalgia. It's easy for people of any age to place themselves in these characters' lives.
So which high school movies do you love?
