There's an episode of "Parks and Recreation" where Leslie and a man named Justin break up. The reason it didn't work was due to the fact that, as Ron Swanson pointed out, Justin was just getting stories that he could share in the future. Ron called him a "tourist," just collecting memories and stories. It was meant as an insult to Justin, a reason for Leslie and Justin to break up, but a few days ago I realized it was quite relatable.
I'm barely in my 20s. It's the time of my life to be selfish. It's the time to go around and collect stories. The truth is, at this point in time, making stories and memories is my favorite thing. I like to travel, and to experience different things everywhere I go. I like to make friends, and with those friends make new memories.
People like to joke that I know everyone. It's not true, but I do have random connections to a lot of people. That's not because I'm energetic – because I'm not – or because I'm overly friendly. Instead, I'm just open to opportunities. I was once kind to a security guard at the Tower of London and she took me through the secret back way to cut the line and see the Crown Jewels. I shared my opinion with a teacher and got offered an internship.
Being kind is important, but being ready and open to change and adventure is what really causes these great stories. Staying at home all day isn't going to offer those memories that form into the stories. Sure, you can have good times with friends at home, but are you more likely to remember those days at home or a spontaneous road trip? Take the time to tour around not only your own life, but others as well. Make friends with random people, and get their stories. You never know where they'll lead or what inspiration will come from them.
When you're young, it's your time to be spontaneous and be a tourist. It's easiest to do this either before you start your career, or at the beginning of it. Otherwise, you may not have a good chance to take a break and do something crazy. I'm not saying it's now or never, but let's be honest, often now is the best time to go.
Being a tourist isn't a bad thing. Keep your eyes open and be excited about the future, but also about the now. Don't be afraid to look up at the buildings (or trees, whichever you prefer) around you. Collect stories in your mind or keep a small journal with what you've done (which could be in picture form). Be selfish while you can, and do what you want now, before it's too late.
