The name Brock Turner should sound familiar to you.
Actually, the name Brock Turner should piss you off because it should remind you about the injustice that took place months ago, and is still perpetuating that injustice today.
Brock Turner was a student athlete at Stanford University, who raped an unconscious woman behind a dumpster. Not only did they find his DNA on her body, but there was two eye witnesses that pulled him off of her.
Turner should have faced up to fourteen years in prison.
However because Judge Aaron Persky was the judge over the case, Turner was only given a sentence of six months. Turner was off the hook because he was a student athlete. Judge Persky was sympathetic towards him and gave him the lightest sentence possible: six months.
Since then, after many, many petitions to have Judge Persky removed from the bench, in August, the biased Judge has finally quit practicing Criminal Courts and is now only dealing with civil cases.
Yay! The crappy Judge was punished, and the Rapist is in jail! All is well, right?
Wrong. I'm still pissed.
Here's why I'm pissed off:
That Rapist, Brock Turner, is being released from prison Friday, September 2nd after serving only three months of his sentence. He got off early for "good behavior."
His already light six month sentence was reduced to three months before he even stepped foot in prison. The Judge who gave him the ridiculously light sentence supported the argument that Turner was a promising student and a young athlete, and didn't deserve to have his life ruined over this minor incident.
Are you kidding me right now?
Brock Turner couldn't keep it his pants long enough to find a girl that could actually consent to have sex with him, and yet he doesn't deserve to have his life ruined?
His victim didn't deserve to be raped. A Rapist, such as Brock Turner, deserve to live in an eight by six foot room, and only get fresh air for an hour a day.
I keep pointing out that Brock Turner is a Rapist, because that's exactly what he is. Until 'Rapist' is permanently branded with a hot steel iron on his forehead, he will never be labeled enough as a Rapist.
The only 'good' to come out of this case is a change of a law.
Lawmakers in California recently passed legislation forcing jail time in cases like Turners. Had this law been in place when Turner was on trial, he would have been given a minimum of three years.
Although I don't believe three years is long enough, a life time wouldn't even be long enough, at least it's better and less of a slap in the face than three months.
Even though the law is passed for longer prison time, which is good for Brock's future victims, it changes nothing.
That Rapist served three months, and that's it.
He doesn't deserve a second chance. He doesn't deserve a clean break. He doesn't deserve to have a normal life after what he did.
When he walks out of jail Friday, he's going to leave with a smile, so glad that he paid his debt to society, and ecstatic to continue his life as a free man.
He gets to feel joy again after raping an unconsious girl, and serving only three months in prison.
That's why I'm still angry.
