Even though I love to write in general, keeping a journal wasn't something I'd ever given a lot of thought to. Sure, I had a diary, but that was when I was about 8 years old and most likely only write in it about the Spongebob episodes I liked.
Despite the number of people who have told me that keeping a journal would be a great idea, I was a little apprehensive about it. It felt like it would take quite a bit of effort to keep up with it every day. And to me, it seemed kind of dorky. But one thing I've realized since having one is that it can be a great thing to keep around, whether you like to write or not. That is, provided no one reads it.
There's no set of "rules" when it comes to journaling. You can choose to write in it once every two months, or twelve times a day if that's what suits you. There's so much you can put in a journal too-your thoughts, ideas, recipes, dreams, etc.
For me, journaling is a great way to sort of what can often be the confusing tangle of thoughts floating around my head on a daily basis. Sometimes, if you're feeling bad, worried, anxious, scared, or whatever about anything, writing it out takes away its power and helps you sort it out easier.
It doesn't hurt to have a set of colorful, glittery gel pens that you can use to write it.
If you'd like to plan something out, even if it's something as simple as figuring out what you're going to do with the rest of your day, it can be a lot easier to have it on paper in front of you.
This is something which is just for you. It's a place where you can also put down the thoughts, fears, worries, or insecurities that you may not feel like sharing with other people. Writing down these things solidifies them and helps you acknowledge and deal with them.
So, while it may be dorky, feel free to take a few minutes out of your time every day and just write.
