I believe in voting, I think it is the absolute best part of Democracy. I still cannot bring myself to register to vote. So how come someone who encourages all of her friends and family to vote doesn't do it. I have a few very personal reasons that keep me from voting and am suddenly faced with a lot of pressure to defy my choice.
Everywhere I go there is something about voting, from the people tabling on FGCU's campus to people putting "MAGA" on their food carts at the mall, where I work. There are signs on every single street, billboards saying voting beings in November, people even messaging me on social media asking if I'm registered.
The amount of pressure has never been higher on me to vote.
But I never will.
In previous articles, I've mentioned my anxiety and depression which make normal things in life more difficult than they should be. When it comes to something as important as choosing a presidential candidate or putting in my opinion on bills and legislation, I get sent into a panic. I am too exhausted dealing with everything else and fighting against my own thoughts to even think about registering and going to vote.
This reason is more introspective, but my grandmother always told me not to vote. I know how insane that is and that it is an outdated idea but as a child, I vowed I would never vote. I, of course, am not choosing to abstain from voting because of my childish vow but I think that being told not to vote at a young age is still impacting me.
A question I have to throw in, for the sake of asking, why does our country trust 18-, 19-, and 20-year-olds to vote but not enough to let us legally drink? I know a ton of people my age (20) who voted for a flaming hot Cheeto to be president, but they aren't allowed to have a beer at dinner? Choosing a president is way more dangerous than getting drunk.
I want people to vote and encourage everyone I know to go to the polls, but having it shoved down my throat by others is definitely extreme. It almost pushes me to not vote even more rather than encourage me to. Also with all of the propaganda and different campaigns, I find it hard to focus on the good in candidates and find it hard to stay completely informed. This makes me one of the worst people to work.
With that being said, vote for who you believe will be the best for America. Keep in mind America was built on the backs of immigrants and we should love everyone equally even if we don't see eye to eye with them. (Unless they're rapists, murders or Donald Trump. Then screw them).
Happy voting, from the girl who doesn't vote.
