Whether you're in Chi Omega, PiKE, Tri Sigma, Lambda Chi Alpha, Delta Zeta, or nothing at all, at one point or another someone has probably used this statement as a reason for becoming involved in the Greek community. I know that during recruitment I used this line myself, but that was before I knew what it was actually about. Yes, having a fraternity or sorority on your resume does look good, but if you're joining for that sole purpose, you're joining for the wrong reason.
Greek Life already has a bad reputation because of all the chapters that participate in disgraceful actions. It brings down all of the other chapters that work so hard to maintain their good reputation, A.K.A. not hazing new members. So yes, there's so much more to Greek Life than lookin' so good on a resume and no, it does not include outrageous partying or hazing.
Being a part of my sorority has changed my outlook on Greek Life as a whole. All in all, it revolves around bettering oneself as well as the community that surrounds it. Most fraternities and sororities require a minimum GPA and a certain number of community service hours, so of course, this would make for an appealing job application. Sure, besides all of the academic requirements, Greek Life can include tons of pictures with "basic white-girl poses", an unnecessary amount of recruitment shirts, and big/little canvases galore, but again, it's so much more than that. It's a whole new, tight-knit family that will love you unconditionally. It's about serving others before yourself. It's all about something bigger than yourself. Have you ever heard the "basic" saying, "Joining *insert sorority name here* has changed my life,"? Although it's overused and most definitely mocked, it really is the truth. It's such a life-changing experience and it's about so much more than just "looking good on a resume".
