Greek life. It is something many of us have heard of and something many of us are confused about. For me, however, Greek life was the best decision I have made. I, like many others, didn't know if I wanted to be a part of Greek life or if it was even for me, but my freshman year summer roommate was rushing and I decided why not give it a shot.
Going Greek is a personal decision for someone to make and for many people, they realize before or during recruitment it isn't what they want. This, however, doesn't make a person who is not in a Greek organization less than a person who is in a Greek organization. The people you will meet during recruitment are the sweetest and understanding women, whether you join or not. These people know what it was like to be in your shoes, they were you at a time, and they understand that it is overwhelming to go through recruitment and that during the process some people realize this is just not what they want or were looking for in an organization. The people of Greek life want the people going through recruitment to find an organization whether it's Greek or not Greek to find a place where they belong and enjoy spending their time.
Being in a Greek organization has given me so many things to look forward to if I have had a horrible day. My sisters are the people that help lift me up when I am homesick, failed a test, or just bored to tears. Sisters are the people you call because you are so far away from home and have found a home away from home, or because that cute guy from class never texted you and you are really upset. They will come to be by your side and comfort you in the worst or best of situations. It is obvious that not all your sisters are going to be your best friend because that is almost impossible, but there are going to be a group of sisters who are going to be "your reason why" and why you stay even when it gets too hard sometimes. This is what finding your people feels like.
Being in a Greek organization brought me so many more opportunities than I could have ever imagined. The philanthropy of my sorority has inspired me to be more involved in my community and to always make a positive impact on the world. Greek life helps network you with older sisters who have graduated and have similar goals in life and can help give you tips or even help you find your first real person job. Greek life has helped bring so many of my sister's amazing internships that I soon hope I will be able to achieve. Greek life has so many women who inspire you to be a better woman to other women, to love yourself and to leave your mark on the world.
Whether your sorority is considered "top tier" or "bottom tier", just remember it doesn't matter what other people think of your sorority and the way you look or do things. It matters what you think and how you feel about your sorority, if you love the people in your sorority and feel comfortable with them and you are literally at home, then you are in a top tier sorority because you are surrounded by people who support you and you support back.
So good luck with recruitment even if you don't go Greek and I hope you find your reason why.
