Why Going To A Small College Is Great

I thought I wanted to go to a huge school once too.

Why Going To A Small College Is Great

When I was younger I had always dreamed of going to a school with over thousands of kids. As I grew older this didn’t really change until I got offered a position on the Northwood University volleyball team. I decided to do some research on the school and I saw that they only had a few thousand students. I didn’t want to not give the school a chance so I decided to go on a visit. When I went for my visit I was surprised to see how much I liked the area, the people, and how comfortable I had already felt. I soon found through my freshmen year that there are many perks of going to a small school.

1.The teachers help you.

When I went to a few of my first classes I was just as confused as any other freshmen student might be. I was also very scared that it would just be a huge lecture room with a few hundred students and I ultimately wouldn’t be able to find much help if I needed it. As soon as my first day was over I had already found myself asking questions. I went to email one of my professors and I got an email back within a day. I was surprised but also happy. I was asking one of my friends that goes to a larger school and he said that the professors can take up to a week top email you back. This made it much easier to get through my classes.

2.You actually know people.

When I went to my first class I had already known a few people which surprised me. When I walked down our mall walk I had known some people as well. It was so comforting to already know people and be able to see a friendly face on a stressful day. Also when you went out on the weekends you didn’t feel the slightest bit of awkwardness because you knew people as well as the people were so friendly. I also was able to find even more help in my classes because of the factor that so many of the students I knew had already had the teachers and knew what to expect.

3.You always feel safe.

From talking to a few of my friends at a bigger campus, they sometimes say that they don’t feel as safe as they would want because they don’t always know the people around them and they don’t always know where they are exactly. I never feel this. No matter where I am on campus I either know exactly where I am at or I see someone that I know. I think that this is such a positive perk of being at a smaller school because no one should ever not feel safe with their surroundings.

4.Time is easy.

As an athlete you sometimes have to go from practice to class in the matter of five minutes. On a bigger campus this would be a major problem. However, on a smaller campus that five minutes gives me time to get to my class as well as get a snack in between. Time is never not on my side because I am able to get to where I need to go fast as well as I always know the fastest and most efficient way to get there. On a bigger campus I don’t know how I would be able to survive and make it to class on time.

These are just a few reasons on why being on a smaller campus has a lot more perks compared to a bigger campus. Now I am not saying that a smaller campus is for everyone, some people definitely like the bigger campus, I thought I would as well. But all I am saying is just give the smaller campuses a chance because you may end up liking it.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
