I Asked 9 Girls Why They Went Greek And Here's What They Said

9 girls told me why they joined a sorority and it turns out, going Greek can change your life; you really just have to give it a chance and see where it takes you!

1. Zoe: Alpha Gamma Delta.

"The main reason why I went Greek was because I had so many friends who went Greek and I saw how happy it made them to be in such a supportive environment. It really seemed like they had all grown into themselves, even after being apart of it for such a short period of time. I was so proud of them, and I just wanted to give myself the opportunity to go out and see if I could find my own home in Greek life. I went out at my old school and ended up dropping because I couldn't see myself with any of the sororities there. When I came to Longwood, I decided to go out one more time because I knew I owed it to myself to try to find my home. Plus, being a transfer student can be really difficult when trying to feel at home at school, so I wanted to become part of something bigger than myself and I wanted more opportunities to volunteer and give back to the school and the community. It worked out so much better than I thought it would because I found Gam and realized that's where I belonged all along. Best decision of my college career."

2. Caitlin: Kappa Delta.

"I went Greek because I wanted to become more involved at Longwood, but with going Greek came meeting so many amazing girls who provide a huge support system for me. Ever since going KD I've gained so much more confidence and so many beautiful sisters who I know are going to be my lifelong friends! I really encourage everyone to go Greek because it has completely changed my college experience for the better."

3. Bri: Sigma Kappa.

"I went Greek because I wanted to be more involved on campus with people who share my values."

4. Anna: Sigma Sigma Sigma.

"I went Greek because my mom told me that being in Greek life made her college experience what it was. I knew that when I got to Longwood I wanted to search out a sorority where I felt at home. So after just a few open houses, I knew I was going to follow in my mom's footsteps and go through recruitment. I am so blessed to have found a home away from home filled with ladies that value individuality and acceptance. My journey in starting Greek life has truly made me love my University even more."

5. Reilly: Alpha Gamma Delta.

"I went Greek because I wanted to find a group of people that I could relate to and become close to during my last two years at school and continue to have a support system beyond college".

6. Alexa: Sigma Kappa.

"I went Greek because I wanted the sense of family at school and have more opportunities. I love the feeling of belonging I have with my sisters and now at Longwood. I know that even the sisters that I don't talk to regularly are there for me just as much as the ones I always talk to. I never thought Greek life was for me, but I wouldn't give Sigma Kappa up for the world now that I have and adore it."

7. Megan: Sigma Sigma Sigma.

"I originally did not plan to go Greek because I was kind of close-minded about it. Then, I decided to go to mock recruitment and fell in love with the idea of finding my "home". I wanted to find women who would empower me to become a better woman, support me and who would also become like my 2nd home!"

8. Cristen: Alpha Gamma Delta.

"I went Greek because I felt that I wasn't involved on campus at all. I wanted to become involved and at the same time I wanted to meet new people that I could call my forever family!"

9. Reagan: Delta Gamma

"At first, I wasn't sure if a sorority was for me. However, after finding Delta Gamma and bonding with my sisters, I found my home on campus. My big has become my best friend; we talk to each other all day, every day. I do everything with my sisters from eating dinner to bowling to movie nights and more. Going Greek was the best decision of my campus career!"

As you can see, going Greek has changed the lives of all these young women for the better but in completely different ways.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
