This past week, I went to go see the movie, "Get Out." I honestly did not have extremely high expectations for this movie, but the trailer looked fairly interesting. It has been almost a week since I have seen it, and honestly, I can not get it out of my head.
Horror movies are my favorite genre by far. I have seen the slayer-type movies, the haunted house-type movies, and the psychological thrillers. Since I have been exposed to so many movies of this variety, it is fairly easy to guess the plot twists and the jump scares before the main plot even begins. However, "Get Out" stands alone as a movie that actually left me guessing from beginning to end.
Normally I would not do an article giving a movie review for a singular movie, but this one deserves your attention. Here are a few reasons why I think you should stop what you are doing and go see this movie right now.
1. The script is incredible
I could honestly write a ten-page paper just on the subtle messages that were weaved throughout this movie. Jordan Peele intricately made this script something special. There were references to other movies, parts of history, and problems that need to be addressed in America today. I was extremely pleased with the light-hearted yet terrifying way that this story played out.
2. The plot is not easy to figure out
What ruins many great horror movies is that they start to become repetitive of one another. The killer usually gets killed or runs away, the victim somehow manages to escape the terror they were thrust into, and life goes on. "Get Out" seeks to change the way you view a horror movie. I think I am fairly smart, and even I could not figure out the direction the movie was heading.
3. The eeriness to the movie is one to enjoy
If you are anything like me, then you will love movies that give you goosebumps. The beginning of the movie starts off with a song by Childish Gambino, and one of the lyrics says, "Stay woke." While I wrote this off as being a background song, it took on a whole new meaning later on in the film. There are so many instances of just pure eeriness that lead up to the final scenes that leave you sitting there wondering what just happened.
4. Racism is brought up, but in a new way
Obviously anyone with eyes or hears is aware of this race issue that our country is facing right now. Regardless of how you feel about this issue, this movie brings up a really interesting way of talking about racism. While the media and others typically blame Republicans, Neo-Nazis, white people in general etc., of being racist, this movie actually goes after the white middle-class liberals who think being black is "cool." This is a running theme in the movie which I find fascinating because it is different than what I am used to hearing. Being mixed, I always have people come up to me and try to relate to me by mentioning they have black friends or they listen to hip-hop music. I find it hilarious, but this movie highlights why that can also be wrong.
5. The cast is perfect
The casting in this movie was perfect. There was no cheesiness to any of the scenes like you find with so many other horror movies. The feelings were believable, and nothing felt like it was forced. Also, the reviews speak for themselves. This movie is one to go watch, and then buy tickets to see again.
