Before I delve into this topic I would recommend reading one of my previous articles. I'm writing this to tell fangirls or fanboys that you are wrong. These are my personal opinions regarding the fact that society views celebrities or people in the spotlight as something other than what they are: people.
Obviously, everyone has their favorite actors, actresses, music artists, and sports idols but I think we need to take a step back and realize that they are just other people with extraordinary talents.
Now, don’t get me wrong. If I ever met George Strait, Paul McCartney, Leonardo DiCaprio, or Nastia Lukin, I would be pretty darn excited. I think the problem comes in when society puts these people with a giant following on a pedestal. Personally, I’m not really a concert person. I don’t enjoy being pushed around by big crowds or even being in them in the first place. I don’t prefer having beer and liquor spilled all over my feet; that’s just a waste. I’d rather drink it.
I may be one of the few that feel this way, but let me tell you why. A lot of people think musical artists wouldn’t be where they are today without their fans. That’s true in a sense, but if you think about how lucky the ones that make it big are, that statement isn’t true. A lot of famous people started from nothing. Most of them had to go door to door just to get someone to listen to what they had to offer. After being turned down over and over, they pushed forward and landed where they are today.
To me, that kind of perseverance and confidence from within shows that just like me and you, it’s possible. They were gifted with a talent and believed in themselves to get to the top. The lesson their journeys teach us shows a lot more to me than paying hundreds of dollars to shake a hand and take a picture to post on Instagram. Even though ‘they would be nothing without their fans,' they got themselves to that position. It usually doesn’t happen over night. A lot of hard work and sleepless nights are put in to make it big.
I have been to a few concerts in my life. And while they were always a good time, I noticed a pattern. Everyone--girls or guys, older or younger--was obsessed with touching the performer's hand or getting the t-shirt off their back. Or even worse, fans took their bras off and threw them on stage.
But a couple weeks later, when a scandal comes out about whoever they were just wooing over, the fans "can’t believe someone of that caliber" could do something like it. That’s a vague example, but I know you can think about someone to apply it to. What blows my mind is that us "fans" seem to forget that even though celebrities are in the spotlight, it doesn’t make them any less human.
Just because they have thousands or millions of people looking up to them and supporting their work, doesn’t mean they deserve to be ridiculed for a mistake. The fact that they were born with the ability to jump high, sprint down the field at a ridiculous speed, or hit a high note and play the guitar at the same time doesn't mean we should run after them like animals chasing prey if we seem them on the street.
They're just people blessed with extraordinary talents.
