By now, I'm sure at least one of your friends or family members has approached you and asked, "do you watch This Is Us?!" I've asked that question myself a handful of times and almost 50% of the time, the answer I get is, "No I don't, but I really want to! I've heard great things." Most people have continued on to say that they don't have the time to watch another show or they have trouble committing to a time slot every week, but if you let a reason like that prevent you from watching this show, you are truly missing out.
Although only on its first season, millions of people have already fallen so in love with the NBC comedy-drama to the point where NBC has already picked up the show for two more seasons. Leads, Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia bring you into the lives of the Pearson family, making you feel as if you are a member of the family yourself. The characters are all so personable, which makes it easy to feel connected to them even if you cannot relate to the character at all.
What's unique about the show and makes it stand out from others is the timeline it follows. The story is centered on the lives of Jack and Rebecca Pearson and their three children, but is told in a rather interesting way. The scenes alter back and forth between the 1980's where Jack and Rebecca are preparing for their kids to be born and later on raising them, and present day 2017, where the Pearson children are now adults and leading their own lives. It's almost like you get to follow Randall, Kate and Kevin (the Pearson kids) throughout their entire lives, which adds to the sense of feeling connected to them. You start to feel as if you met them the day they were born, knew them throughout their childhood and are continuing to get to know them as adults.
The show features many things that affect families all over the world, including adoption, body image, sexuality, cancer, and death. The show incorporates these topics into the lives of the Pearson family in a subtle, realistic way. By watching the show, viewers become exposed to situations that they may not be experiencing in their own lives, which in today's society is more important than ever. The show is so modern and can teach people a lot about what other people experience. Watching a character you love experience something such as being curious about who his biological parents are or struggle with her body image can oftentimes make you aware of a struggle other people go through that you never really paid attention to, or perhaps comfort you by realizing you are not the only person dealing with your current situation. This Is Us brings all different types of people together and focuses on the fact that we are all just trying to get through life the best we can.
Most importantly, the show makes you appreciate your loved ones even more than you already do. It makes you realize how precious life is and how sometimes we may not have as much time as we think we do, which means that we should cherish every day that much more. You learn that as different as people may seem, we are all more similar than we believe. Falling in love with the Pearson family is inevitable and will make you realize just how much you love your own.
