Something that I have enjoyed doing for quite a few years is volunteering. I have volunteered at quite a number of places, including a couple museums, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and, most recently, the hospital in my town. While I don’t get paid to do what I do, I still find immense value in it for several reasons.
For one, it gives me good experiences working with people of all different backgrounds. As an introvert, I sometimes have a hard time connecting with and having conversations with the people I encounter in everyday life. When I volunteer, I meet many individuals from various walks of life, and it gives me the opportunity to practicing communicating with them.
However, I don’t volunteer just to benefit myself. The purpose of volunteering is to dedicate your time and abilities to a cause that you are passionate about and that makes a difference. It is very gratifying to take time out of your day to do something out of the goodness your heart for someone who can’t repay you. Don’t get me wrong; paying jobs are great. But being able to offer yourself to a cause that doesn’t give you anything in return gives you a feeling unlike any other. You come away from your experience with a heart that is full of gratitude, contentment, and satisfaction. And undoubtedly, the people whose lives you have touched will be grateful for your service and will feel as equally fulfilled.
I would urge everyone to give volunteering a try. There are many organizations who would be extremely appreciative if they had some caring, dedicated volunteers. Besides, doesn’t giving back to your community and making the world a better place sound like a good idea?
