Last Tuesday, Freeform premiered a two hour new series. " The Bold Type," takes viewers inside the world of a women’s "Cosmopolitan"-type magazine (one of pop culture’s favorite settings). It’s part journalism drama, part "Sex and the City"-style female-bonding comedy.
The new Freeform show revolves around the life of three twenty-somethings besties, as they navigate their careers at Scarlet Magazine and of course romance in New York City. Meet Jane, the newly promoted writer; Kat, the social media director; and Sutton, the assistant who is desperately trying to find her next step. Each young woman has a different wild personality, but they’re all still BFFs anyway.
During the premiere, we learn that Kat isn’t only Scarlet’s confident social media head. Kat experiences a lot of sexual identity confusion as she starts to fall for the energetic lesbian photographer named Adena. Sutton’s secret office relationship with board member Richard could come off as a forgettable fling, but it gets more interesting, when she confesses she wants more than just a steamy hookup – she wants to actually be in a relationship. And newly staff writer Jane is trying break out of her shell. Her personality as a writer forces her to reveal personal details about herself. Together, the three women are just trying to make it. Sure they are trying to make it while living in amazing apartments and wearing designer clothes; However, if you take the fantasy part out, "The Bold Type" offers a modern take on the issues young women face today.
It’s natural to draw comparisons to other pop culture that has similar story lines: "The Carrie Diaries" – Jane really has a true passion for writing – "Sex and the City" – but with millennials (Carrie Bradshaw would be proud). At different points in times of watching the premiere, I could sense those vibes. But "The Bold Type" proves that it is an easy show to root for friendship.
More than anything "The Bold Type" makes television just plain fun. There are no life or death scenarios, murders and mysteries or love triangles. "The Bold Type" is like a cool breeze on a hot summer day in New York City (although that would not stop the girls from looking perfect).
Catch up on new series "The Bold Type" only on Freeform and fall in love with it as much as I did!
