Why Even Try
Koraima B. Gonzalez

Sometimes you get to a point in your life where you wonder why you even try. It can be in relation to anything — you may wonder it about a career, a passion or even a person. It usually stems from feeling like you're putting in a lot of effort into something and receiving nothing in return. I'll be the first to say, however, that love and happiness come with quite a price, and it's one that usually isn't immediately paid back.

There is never going to be something that comes easily. When you genuinely enjoy a relationship or a pastime or a passion, there is no need for an immediate recompense. When there is a pure love within you to do something or share your time with someone, you need no ulterior motive besides bringing you joy.

When we break down the reasons why we stay, it's quite simple. We don't give up because as people we refuse to leave behind something so special. Time is precious, and when you invest it in something or someone you love, you don't want to think it was all for naught. I vaguely remember being told that stubbornness is a part of being human.

There's an embedded element of never giving up on anything within us all. Sometimes, all that we ask for in return is for something, or someone, to reciprocate that sentiment. When we are on the precipice of letting go of it, you need to remember why you held on for so long.

To take for granted your own passions is one thing. To take yourself for granted is another. We as people need a constant reminder that life is not as simple as it may seem for others. We must remember that if we truly love something or someone, then we need to act like it. All of the wondering will get you nowhere if you can't do something in a upstanding manner. If you love it or them, then demonstrate it.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
