If you haven’t heard Dua Lipa’s New Rules you need to asap.
This song has become so empowering to women and a great song to listen to on replay. The lyrics really do offer three rules that will not only help you move on from either an ex or just someone who doesn’t intend to want more, that casual fling. Here are those three rules broken down.
1. Don't pick up the phone.
You know he's only calling 'cause he's drunk and alone.
Our phones are one of the most dangerous tools we have. Odds are you are debating whether you should text him. Question yourself why? Does he deserve that text or call your about to do? The answer? No. We do a lot of things when we have been heartbroken, felt used or intoxicated. Having friends helps you clear your mind when it comes to these tough positions. Be strong and put your phone away or in airplane mode.
The lyrics continue to say you know he's only calling 'cause he's drunk and alone this goes for both you and him. This state of mind will only make things worse. Remember that you are a queen, a priority and you're worth more than anything he has to offer. If he only calls when he is drunk and has no one else to be with that has a statement within itself, a statement which says that you are almost seen as easy and openly available to him only, which you are not.
What you need is someone who will want to be with you no matter the time, location and people. You are no secret and deserve to be shown off. Safe to say put your phone down and enjoy the life that is ahead of you, who knows your special someone could be closer than you think.
2. Don't let him in.
You have to kick him out again.
Once we let people into our lives it can be very difficult to let them go. Physically it can be fast but mentally it is super hard. Though you know the consequences of staying with this person you still want them in your lives but intact boundaries. This rule means to not let him move in your life any more than he should be.
If things didn't work out you shouldn't continue pushing for it. Don't let him know you more personally, physically and emotionally. It has not worked out and you don't want to keep kicking him back out of your life repeatably.
You've tried getting to know him and vice versus but he had other things to worry about so don't waste your time. By letting him more in you become weak and vulnerable. You don't want to be stuck in the same pattern over and over again so it's best to leave him behind a closed door both metaphorically and literally.
3. Don't be his friend. You know you're gonna wake up in his bed in the morning. And if you're under him. You ain't getting over him.
Being friends with an ex, or past fling can be extremely difficult and complicated. Since you both had feelings or shared intimacy with one another it makes being friends without feelings hard. You both were used to being with one another in a certain way and its hard to resist those urges. Not to say its impossible, just hard.
You know his intentions can be twisted and you must recognize this after constant days such as these. Though you both can share intimacy there is no actual connection. Relationships need an emotional connection not just physical. He may have a different definition of a friend than you. Remember you are a person and not a toy to be played with. You must learn to get over that hard bridge in your life and accept that what you guys had in the past no longer applies to your future.
But as Dua Lipa says "practice makes perfect" and it's okay if you are unable to get these rules down and accept them at first. But people are blessings and lessons. One of the most important things to do is to remain true to yourself and think about the position you are in. This break up anthem is one thing to help you realize the flaws in a past relationships and that there are tactics to help you move on. It is emotionally draining to try and move on but it is best for you and you'll feel amazing afterwards.
