Why I Don't Like Christmas Music

Don't Ba Humbug me, I love the holidays, but I could live without the music.

Why I Don't Like Christmas Music
Lukas B.

It's that time of year when every radio station in the country pulls out the ol' "All I Want For Christmas is You" track. It gets played every five minutes because apparently that's the only holiday music we can think of to play. Not to mention that when the holidays come around, they get their own stations. It's the same old songs every year and they have no affect on me.

Now, I will admit that I do not care for Christmas or holiday music. Go ahead and say that I have no holiday cheer, but you'd be wrong. I have plenty of holiday and Christmas cheer. Ever since I was little I never liked this kind of music. I'll even share a fun fact about my family about holiday music with you. If you know the song "Feliz Navidad" by Jose Feliciano, yeah well he taught my grandmother how to play guitar. BOOM.

Growing up I had a younger brother and he would always tell me to turn my music off because my brother doesn't like music. Weird, I know. However, the only kind of music he likes is Christmas music or Holiday songs. So, you can imagine what it might be like living with a younger sibling who only listens to Christmas music. Annoying. Imagine hearing the one song you hate on the radio but instead of it being played once, its played after every song, all year round. Just imagine having the holidays in July.

Another reason why I don't enjoy holiday music is because it's the same songs every year. Yeah maybe the Pentatonix did a wonderful cover of Silent Night, but they didn't make their own songs. At least Justin Bieber made his own album of Christmas Music, ones he wrote himself. That's the only Christmas album I will listen to, to this day. I wouldn't mind it as much if artists had some creativity and made up their own songs. I don't think it would be very hard, what's hard is listening to the same song being covered every single year.

The last reason why I don't care for this kind of music, is the fact that it just doesn't fit my style of music. Everyone has their own different opinions on music and if you love Christmas music great, good for you. But don't think I'm going to sit in the car with you while you jingle it up. Like I said before, it's not that I don't have any holiday cheer. Trust me I do. I just don't like the type of music that comes around. If I'm going to be honest here, holiday music drags on and eventually it becomes over played. It becomes over played because it's the same song in six different artists covers. No thanks. Yes I understand that a lot of holiday music could be for culture, or religion and I will gladly respect that.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
