After Christmas, the anticipation of the New Year is upon us and that means... it is New Year's resolution season! But for the new year, I don't have any New Year's resolutions. "Why?" you might ask. Well, I believe that my life goals should not be determined by a calendar. I want to make a life resolution, not a new year's resolution.
Though the idea of a New Year's resolution is nice, it gives you a clean slate to start a new year with a new outlook on life. I love seeing the posts about New Year's resolutions on Facebook. Friends and family taking the initiative to take control of their lives and make a real change big or small.
But why not start a new outlook on life whenever you want? To be in the month of April and decide to change a big aspect of your life, to make a real change and be able to commit to it, you don't need a calendar for that, you need drive.
I'm pretty good at procrastinating when it comes to changing my life choices for the better. I have many times said, "I'll start exercising Monday," or, "I'll start next month." And then that day comes and I push it off to the next day or the next month.
I feel like I have a New Year's resolution, but it is not a New Year's resolution. It is a LIFE RESOLUTION. I want to make a life resolution. I want to set goals for myself and stay by them for as long as I can.
Even if my life goals are to think about one good thing that happened to me that day or to not drink pop. To become more positive or to even continue on my trail of education within college, or make new friends.
The possibilities for me and anyone are endless and they can start or stop at any time, and they don't have to be dictated by the calendar or the pressure of having a New Year's resolution at the start of the year.
Why live by the calendar or say, "I'll try again next year." Make that try again now, start tomorrow, try again, keep trying. If you are horrible about keeping to your New Year's resolution, it is okay. You are not a complete failure if you cannot complete or hold to your New Year's resolution. You're only human and you can keep living life. Just as long as you keep trying and continue to move forward.
I'm not trying to steer you away from New Year's resolutions; they are great. It is a great place to start over for yourself and to really try and make a change. If you love making New Year's resolutions then, by all means, keep doing it. Just make sure you are doing something!!!
If I break those goals, then I will simply go back to square one, reset the clock and begin again. I plan to change my ways of procrastination and get serious about the life choices I make, one day at a time.
