Every year seems to start with high hopes and end with phrases that imply the year went horribly, that the year needs to end already. I recall reading memes, and all kind of posts about people's excitement for 2016. Now, people are treating it as if it was the worst year ever, just like last year, and the year before that. And this continuous wave of negative light towards something we at first appreciate greatly is evident on social media.
It's a funny pattern, how people's views and aspirations of every single year at first start off with popular phrases such as "new year, new me," and "can't wait for this year to be over." It makes those who had good years feel bad and those who had bad years feel worse. According to social media, the year not only progressively gets bad through memes and posts, but they usually convey failure. We have all made mistakes here and there throughout the year, but we shouldn't act as if our lives are always so bad.
It's great to have good motivation, but we perpetually believe that every year will be completely different from the last, when in actuality, it's just a continuation of our lives. 'New Years' was a great concept until the internet happened, and people boasted about the year, labeling it as high hopes at the beginning, and labeling it as something completely opposite at the end. This thwarts people's individual opinions on the year and is quite frankly getting old. Everyone has a different year, and sure not every year will be our best, but we just have to.
Although 2016 was quite possibly one of the more unordinary years of them all, we shouldn't have such negative attitudes about every year to come. The internet makes it seem so, we shouldn't be dreading the rest of the year, but instead embracing it. Try to appreciate this year, and at the same time, don't put your expectations too high or it will.
