Why I Chose To Live By Myself In College

I am not a lonely introvert, but living by myself is the best college choice I could have made.

I am not an introvert. This may confuse you after reading the headline of this article. No, I am not that person who you will always see alone on campus, and I am not that person who is not involved in anything on campus. I have 3 paid on campus jobs, am involved in 3 sports throughout the school year, and serve in numerous other positions. This may be very confusing. Why do I live alone? Well, here are some reasons and explanations.

1. No Conflicts

I have only had a roommate for 1 semester of college. That was my first semester. I am someone who hates conflict. I hate having someone upset at me for a reason I do not know, and I hate having no confront someone when I have an issue. Living by myself now, there is no need to have these conflicts with people.

2. Alone Time Is Easy to Get

There is no need to go to the library to be alone. There is no need to hide your emotions whether they be happiness, sadness, or frustration. You can scream, cry, and cheer as much as you want and nobody is going to yell or get annoyed. Having a bad day and just want to be alone? Well, living by yourself means this is possible whenever you want.

3. Cleanliness Is Optional

You do not have to make it a point to stay somewhat organized and clean when you are alone. Now I know that some roommates are super close and do not mind the messiness, but I am talking a little more extreme. Granted, I am not a messy person. But the OPTION is there. Haven’t done laundry for a week? Nobody will smell it. There are dirty dishes all over? That’s my problem. The fact that how clean my room is will always be MY decision is something that makes me comfortable.

4. Visitors & Friends Whenever

No longer do I need to tell my roommate that some friends are coming over. I don’t have to make room for someone to spend the night. I do not need to worry about finding some privacy for my girlfriend and I. It is so nice being able to do these things whenever I want. Not to mention, I do not have to worry about being quiet at a certain time, or many other things that come with having visitors over with a roommate.

5. You Can Do Anything You Want

Last and most important, there is an infinite number of advantages other than numbers 1-4. In choosing to live alone, you can basically behave any way you want without consulting another person. You aren’t encroaching on anyone else’s space, seeing as the entire apartment is yours. While sometimes it may be lonely, if you live a social life and have friends, you should never find yourself alone during the day. It is always nice to have that option, but usually it is only at nights I find myself to be alone.

While it may differ for someone who spends most of their time inside of the room, I am not in my apartment as much as the average student. Living alone has been a choice I am glad I made in college, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
