Why I Chose To Rush A Small Sorority
Erin Thoresen

We all know Tri-Delta and Delta Zeta and all those other sororities. A huge reason why girls decide to rush them is due to the popularity of the name. Yes, I am a sorority girl admitting the fact that one of the millions of reasons I rushed is for the social broadcast -- it makes you a little more popular than you would be normally. So if the big name is a reason why people rush, why rush the small sororities that don't get much attention?

If you told me five years ago that I would be a proud, active sorority sister I would have probably laughed in your face. I wanted nothing to do with the stereotypical sorority lifestyle nor did I crave that attention. What I didn't know is how effective the appropriate sorority choice could be in my future as well as my current life.

Since I didn't want to be in a huge organization where I just felt like one number in a crowd, I knew I most definitely wouldn't want to be in a large greek society. So when I arrived at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC), the thought of being in a small group of girls with similar interests and a passion for agriculture didn't seem to bad! I got an idea what the organization was about and the things they valued most and decided to rush when I saw how personal and transparent they were.

I have been an active sister for two semesters, now, and I can't imagine my life without these girls. The thing about me is I would rather have four quarters than one hundred pennies meaning I value personal and caring relationships rather than just another girl I have to pretend to like. My Sigma Alpha sisters stay close. We look forward to events and even hangout as a group outside of mandatory events.

I know some girls with notorious greek letters on their shirts but couldn't tell you what their sorority values. Me? My sorority values sisterhood above all. We are kind and honest and transparent and aim to make friendships and connections that will last a lifetime. We have a passion for agriculture and strive daily to better our school and community through engaging on campus and philanthropy events. I have met some beautiful girls inside and out and can name every single girl. How many larger university Greeks can do that?

This is by no means a shot at big sororities. However, if you are like me and value the small yet personal things, maybe a small sorority could help you later on in life whether it's for a career move or simply finding lifelong friends you can turn to. College is not just meant to get a degree (though that should be your goal), it is also meant for branching out and finding yourself. It's meant for finding people and passions and exploring the world and maybe even finding your future career before you even graduate! Sigma Alpha helped me do that. Sigma Alpha got me out of my box and into the world that is all about living life and networking with people of similar interests.

That is why I rushed a small sorority, and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
