Why I Chose Healthy Living

I don't drink, but that does not mean I am having less of an experience.

Why I Chose Healthy Living
Mckenzie Guevarez

I am going to be a junior at Endicott College. I do not go to parties and I am not going to apologize for it. People tell me that I am missing out, that I do not know how to have fun, and that I am boring. I honestly doubt I am missing out on much. I do not want to be surrounded by people who are throwing up because they drank too much and cannot handle their alcohol. I do not want to be near people who are disoriented and are not aware of what they are saying or doing. I do not want to witness people making a fool of themselves and will regret it the next morning. I will walk someone back to their dorm if I see they need help, but I do not want to take part in that crowd. I refuse to put myself in a position where I feel unsafe and unaware of my surroundings.

I do not need alcohol to have a good time. That is why I chose to live in the healthy living dorms the past two years. That decision has had a positive impact in my life and if I had chosen another dorm, the only thing I would have missed out on is meeting some pretty amazing people. Because the dorms were so small everyone basically knew everyone, with an exception of a few people. I found a group of people who had the same mindset as I do. I’ve become really close with everyone in the dorm.

They were always there for me. They supported me and always helped me with my photography homework. They knew how to make me feel better if I was having an off day. They made me laugh until I could not breathe. They made me feel at home away from home. They were always down to watch disney movies with me on a Friday night. They were always excited to play mario kart and foosball with me. On nice days we opened the windows, blasted the music and had dance parties. When we needed a break from homework, we went for late night car rides.

They became family to me and I am thankful for each and every one of them. I honestly do not know how I would have gotten through the school year without them. I am so happy that I chose healthy living and if I got the chance to go back, I would chose it again. I am thankful I get to spend this next school year with them and I look forward to the many adventures we will have in the future.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
