In today's world, I constantly hear this question: "Why are you majoring in that if you aren't going to make any money?"
If it was just about the money, you may have picked a different major. But you don't care about the money. If it was just about pleasing your family, maybe you would've chosen a different major with a better salary. But you don't care about the salary. There are plenty of other reasons (besides, you know, the money) that factor into your decision to be a music major, journalist, history professor, or whatever your heart desires.
You don't want to have to "work" the rest of your life. You want to live your life. You want to do something that you truly enjoy and will want to do for the rest of your life.
You want to choose something that truly sparks the fire inside of you. You want to choose something that you believe you could be great at. You take what interests you and apply it to your coursework to find the major that suits you best.
If you love what you're doing, you're more likely to work hard in your field. You're more likely to fight for what you believe in. You're more likely to put forth more effort than someone who's just there to "work" and make money.
If your field is challenging to get into, you'll work your behind off to make sure that you find your dream job. You'll work hard to make sure that you keep it until you feel that you have done the position justice.
You want to feel good about what you're doing instead of getting material things from your work.
What do I mean? I mean that if you find a job you enjoy but you don't make enough money or get enough days off, you will be okay. Things will work out. If you make extra money doing something that you don't enjoy, you may think that you could spend your free time doing things that you actually enjoy, like traveling. That is rarely the case. Most jobs that pay well don't give you enough days off. If you end up getting those days off, cherish them and use them wisely.
Honestly, if you enjoy what you're doing, why would you want to take time off? At least, I wouldn't.
If you're passionate about being that chemist, that doctor, that CEO of the next major company, then do that.
But if you have a dream or a drive in some other field... Go for it. You won't regret it. You will figure out how to live your life no matter how much money you end up with.
Love your career instead of dreading getting up every morning to go to "work".
