Why I Believe in God

Permanence in a temporary world.

Talk of God and just talk about religion in today’s world seems to have disintegrated, nobody wants to sit and listen to someone “preach” or talk about the miracles of God and the teachings of Christ. It’s all just babble and nonsense in this selfish fast-paced all about me society. Society rather hear about the lies of politicians and lies on every celebrity magazine cover than think about talking about something higher than humans themselves. It is so frustrating that there is so much obsession with things that don’t matter verses why we’re even here in the first place. I want to share my story of how God saved my life and how it all began.

I was raised knowing God because of my dad. We always said evening prayers and we’d go to church on certain Sundays depending on my dad's work. As a young child, I believed, but God wasn’t as close to me as He is now. I wasn’t as dedicated or as serious in His existence, I just knew He existed. My relationship with Him was weak until junior year of high school. I’ll never forget the moment that changed my life forever. I was in the living room with my grandma just talking about life, I had all these questions and curiosities about God and Jesus. I was asking her what had seemed like a hundred questions and I asked if I could have my own Bible and if I could start learning more about it all. Ever since that night, I read, studied, went through a program so I could become officially Catholic and then finally put my total life into God’s hands.

Life was no longer lived for myself, it was all for Him. I wanted to be the best person I could, I wanted to always know there was light at the top no matter how deep the hole. I’m not saying I don’t make mistakes and I’m still working on who I am as a person but no matter how badly I struggle, my faith keeps me alive always helping me crawl my way out when I’m underground. The reason I put my faith and trust into God and His son is because they are the only thing permanent in a temporary world. They are the definition of love and my reason and purpose in life. I want to be a better person because of my faith. I believe in God because He believes in me and everyone when we make the same mistake over and over. I believe in Him because He taught me what unconditional love is and love is the only thing that will save us in this life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
