What does your vision mean to you?

Change Is A Part of Life, Don't Run Away From It

This generation needs to know how important vision is in today's world because there are so many people out there struggling with vision including me. I struggle with it on a daily basis. I can identify myself far sided because I got prescribed my own pair of glasses last spring semester. I have never had a vision problem with the class, working on school, and on a daily basis until last semester. My story about being far sided is one day in class, the screen became super blurry and I couldn't see any of the material my professor was showing on her slides and the blurry-ness made me dizzy as well. I was so nervous if something would happen to me but when I saw my doctor for my vision, he said you are far sided and I need you to get glasses. I was so happy he told me I needed glasses because it would help me see better in class and in my everyday life. It is a struggle to wear glasses while studying, learning the material in class, and when people make assumptions about you wearing glasses.

It is so common that the majority of this world wears glasses to be able to see. Another fact about myself being farsighted is I have to wear my glasses while watching tv or sometimes a movie. I would like to say that the people in this world that are far sided like me are not alone. We all know it is a struggle but other people may not know it is a struggle for us. People wear glasses to make objects in the distance more clear and less blurry. Farsighted means to have blurry vision that is close to them. The ages that are affected by being far-sighted is 3-5, 6-13, 14-18, 19-40, 41-60, and 60+ (Mayo Clinic). Reading, writing, computer work or drawing for long periods of time may cause eye strain and headaches. Students at college and major school institutions have glasses. I know and have a lot of professors that have glasses they wear every day to teach and to be able to see. The question is how can people that work in health care help this situation with people being farsighted? We didn't choose to be far-sighted.

Medical students are taught how to use an ophthalmoscope to perform eye examinations. Eye laser surgery is becoming popular for people who don't want to wear contacts or glasses anymore. They can correct can correct the focal point in the eye, so the image you're looking at is focused on the correct location in the eye. The main thing about farsightedness is you cannot prevent it but you can treat it. The treatment options are glasses, contact lenses, and laser surgery. Farsightedness is usually referred to the medical term called Hyperopia. Even though being farsighted is a daily struggle for me, I am grateful that I have glasses that make me be able to see and a great support system.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
