Why Being A Democrat Makes Me A Bad Person

Sorry, kinda.

Why Being A Democrat Makes Me A Bad Person
Izzie McClain

I'm a democrat, so naturally, I want to receive participation trophies and copious amounts of marijuana (for free of course). I want to be a baby killer, to never work, and to let transgender humans hurt children in the bathroom.

But don't worry, if you're a republican, you hate immigrants. You're obsessed with guns, and you think women are property, all poor people deserve to die, and the LGBTQ+ community has a one-way ticket to hell.

Even above political beliefs, since I'm involved in politics, I am obviously narcissistic, untrustworthy, spineless, corrupt, and have no regard for others.

But don't worry, if you're not involved in politics, you're privileged, entitled, ignorant, and don't care about America - the country that is your home.

You can't win.

Not even winning, you cannot exist in peace. In the current world we live in, no matter who you are, there is someone out there who hates you for your political stance or even lack thereof.

So what do you do?

I have chosen to accept that to some, I am an awful person. I am a monster who doesn't want to earn my successes in this world. (Even though those who know me know that this cannot be further from the truth.)

Yes, I think that gay people have a right to marriage. I believe a woman has the right to terminate an early pregnancy if she isn't ready for a child because let's be honest, baby daddies abandon grown children all of the time for the same reason.

But I also think that free college should not be our highest priority when it comes to improving our education system. I see nothing wrong with owning 18 guns, and in some cases, I think the death penalty is warranted.

While I disagree with a lot of points made by republicans, sometimes I can understand where they are coming from, and that is something I have no problem admitting. All of these things and more are what make me a "bad person" in the eyes of many democrats.

With the current two-party system, you are an "us" or a "them." But many times, we find ourselves being stuck in the middle. To a large number of people, this is a bad thing. This is when we don't belong.

I don't see it that way.

When I disagree with the democratic party, I can reach out a hand to my republican friends. It's times like these that we can learn from both sides and have an honest discussion about what is truly best for the American people.

It is because I have adopted this mentality that I have friends on all ends of the political spectrum. I even wrote an article about how living as a liberal with a conservative mother has impacted my political beliefs. It may not have changed my mind on a lot of policy, but it has kept me grounded in this extremely heated and divisive political climate.

I believe that the best way to create a solution that works for everyone is through honest and open communication (hahaha my liberal is showing). However, this only works when the honest and respectful communication flows both ways.

If you get the chance to talk to someone you might disagree with, do it. You really might be surprised.

And if not, oh well. We're all bad to someone.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
