Why Baseball Is The Greatest Sport I've Never Played

Why Baseball Is The Greatest Sport I've Never Played

It's the bottom of the ninth with a full count and one out left. With a man on first and third, the home team only needs two more runs to tie up the game. My hands are clenched together and my stomach sinks as the batter steps up to the plate. He fixes the position of his hands on the bat, adjusts his helmet, and draws the bat back into position. The pitcher looks to first and then back to the catcher. I can't turn away as the pitcher winds up. The ball releases from his hand and a few seconds later, the sounds of it being hit off of the bat are echoed through the stadium. The ball pops up into the air flying straight toward the right foul pole and into the crowd. Foul ball. I release my breath and take another deep breath in as the batter runs back to home. Please don't strike out, I find myself repeating. The batter swings and the ball is propelled out to center field. The center fielder runs back, reaches his glove above his head and jumps into the air but the ball is too high and drops over the wall.

WALK OFF HOME RUN!

Right now we are in one of the most exciting times of the year... October Baseball. Baseball is one of my favorite things in this life. It's moments like the one described above that make the games so electrifying... Breathtaking... Intriguing.

"But you've never played the game. How can you possibly like baseball this much? Do you even know anything about baseball?" I find questions like those incredibly insulting and I get them all too often. Just because I'm a girl, doesn't mean I like baseball for the tight pants. Let's be real here. I may wear dresses, heels, and lipstick, but I could talk about sacrifice bunts, triple plays, walk-offs, and grand-slams all day.

Give it about a week after the World Series ends and I start counting down until Pitchers and Catchers report.

So what makes baseball so great?

The history and players like Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, Pete Rose, Whitey Ford, and Cy Young. As the years go by, more and more legends are born on the field. I was fortunate to grow up watching the Core Four, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Pedro Martinez, and Alex Rodriguez play.

Whether you're a player or a fan, the memories, like any sport, make it great. I really owe my love to baseball to my parents for signing my younger brother up to play little league. I spent so much time at the fields watching him play each year that I ended up really enjoying it and became obsessed. When my parents would take us on family trips to Yankee Stadium each year, I don't think they realized that I would be the one to quickly build a deep passion for the game instead of my brother.

Over the years I've been lucky to watch some of the most memorable moments of baseball of the last decade.

Aaron Boone's walk-off home run, Derek Jeter's flip play in 2001, and his walk-off double in the last game of his career to name a few. But - nothing compares to the games I've been lucky enough to witness in person. I've seen home runs from some of the best, A-Rod, Derek Jeter, Bryce Harper, and Mike Trout. I've seen intense pitching duals like Clayton Kershaw versus Max Scherzer and I watched Derek Jeter pass Lou Gehrig on the Yankees All Time Doubles list.

In 2011, I sat out in the stands with a poncho on while it poured waiting for the rain delay to lift. I refused to leave without seeing a game even if that meant I had to sit in my wet clothes. That game happened to be the game the Yankees hit 3 grand slams.

The most memorable game of my life thus far was on September 26, 2013. I watched Mariano Rivera pitch in the final game of his career against the Tampa Bay Rays. He pitched 1 1/3 innings and never allowed a runner to reach the base. Andy Pettitte and Derek Jeter then walked out to the mound where they would walk MO off of the field. It was one of the most bone-chilling and emotional moments. There wasn't a dry eye in the stadium. The history and the memories are only a few of the pieces of what makes baseball so great. I love the sounds of the bat hitting the ball or the crowd chanting a player's name or the sudden silence of the crowd before the pitcher throws what could be the final strikeout of a close game. How about how powerful the emotions are when a pitcher gets his first no-hitter or when a rookie gets his first major league hit in his debut game?

To some, a baseball field may just be grass, dirt, and bleachers, but for baseball lovers, beautiful doesn't even begin to describe it. Our love for the game makes a baseball field one of our favorite places to be.

And if I had to pick one of my favorite things about baseball? It would be that time doesn't exist. I love watching the first pitch of the game not knowing what time it will end. Time is one of the most stressful aspects of people's lives. That's the beautiful thing about the game of baseball. It allows you to fully live in the moment and that's why baseball is one of the greatest sports in the world.

As Bryant Gumbel said "the other sports are just sports. Baseball is love."

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
