From first glance, this game was awfully close. A 31-34 victory for the Buffaloes, where the game was back and forth for most of the time.
From an outside look, it may seem like a good ball game, but I can assure you as someone who was there that it was not. Being ranked 24th in the nation last week, the ASU defense that held an 18th ranked Michigan State team scoreless in the first half let in two touchdowns on Colorado's first possessions of the ball. More so, the defense was tripped up by the CU offensive line and never got to the quarterback.
Broken tackles and a complete lack of hustle as there were many times Colorado was getting ready to hike the ball and the Sun Devils' defense wasn't even set yet. It seemed as though the players and coaching staff didn't even have a clue what was going on. As if the defense could catch a break, it was a horrible night for the offense.
Numerous dropped balls, turnovers, and failure of the offensive line to open a lane for running back Eno Benjamin and failure of freshmen quarterback Jayden Daniels to make a play when the team needed it most. They put up points, I'll give them that, but it's clear the team has a lot of work to do if they want to want to make it to the Pac-12 Championship this season, let alone just make it to a bowl game.
Lastly, it was disappointing to see the offense take a knee leaving 28 seconds left on the clock before the half. Not many people will think it's that big of a deal seeing as though ASU got the ball again to start the second half, but that's valuable time left on the clock given the chance to score.
I felt that, as a fan, it was an indicator that Coach Edwards didn't have faith in his offense to get the job done in that little time, proving that the coaching staff didn't adequately prepare the team for this game. The Sun Devils will take on the Cal Bears in Berkeley on Friday, October 27th. We should hope that this is a learning lesson for the team and that they perform at a standard Pac-12 football level this next game.
