Why Are You In College If You Don't Want To Learn?

Being a student in college is one of the most wonderful gifts we could ever receive. Yes it is expensive and yes it's hard work, but the payoff is way better and completely worth those sleepless nights. Not everything goes our way and we certainly don't always make the best grades we could have. But despite all of the struggles college gives us, like eating ramen at four in the morning because you have to study, we're here for a reason. We're here to have the best life we can and to make sure we can provide for ourselves in the future. Yes, you're probably going to change your major at least once and miss a couple of classes, but oh well, everyone does it.

With the semester fast approaching, I know a lot of students are taking a little less priority in their school work. Again, it happens. Or you could be on the opposite side of the spectrum and are currently going crazy and haven't slept in 100 years. My question isn't for the student at the end of the semester; it's for the student at the beginning, middle, and all year round. Why are you in college if you don't want to learn?

Alright, we get it, you're too cool for school. You show up late every day to class with either food in your hands or a smug look on your face. That is if you actually come to class. And if you do, it's always the same thing. You sit there on your phone not paying attention, but when you finally do decide to look up from the mind-numbing screen you call your life, you have no idea what is actually going on. You're not only hurting yourself and wasting money, but you're being disrespectful to the professor. I'll admit, some professors are so boring you just want to jump out the window, but can you imagine teaching the same thing all day to students who would rather be anywhere else? Yeah, I wouldn't have too much spirit either. And then you have some who are the most amazing professors you could ever possibly imagine. But no matter how great or terrible they are, these students still blame them for their problems.

I've had the unfortunate pleasure of coming across many students like these. They constantly ask the professor to repeat themselves, and even then they don't quite understand. It could be the way they learn. I know I'm much more of a visual person and learn better when things are drawn out for me, but those students are different. I'm tired of going to class every day and having to pause during the lesson because some kid can't get off his phone for an hour and pay attention.

Why are you here? Clearly education isn't important to you, so why are you wasting your time and everyone else's? It's OK not to like a class, like math, but even so, you still should try to do the best you can. It doesn't take much effort to take notes and study for a bit. I don't know why you're choosing to spend crazy amounts of money if you're not even going to spend it well. I hope for your sake that one day you'll wake up and realize that maybe you should be a little more serious about school.

I'm not angry at these students -- annoyed maybe, but not angry. I feel sorry for them because they can't see how great they have it. How less stressful college could be if only they would pick up a textbook now and then.

My final thought for these students is: good luck. You'll need it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
