Why Are People Getting So Mad At "Ghostbusters"?

Sometimes people get mad for very weird and very dumb reasons. Recently, a new trailer has been released for the rebooted "Ghostbusters" franchise and there has been a very problematic response. Many people are rejecting this movie, because of the fact that it was rebooted with an all new, all women Ghostbuster team. The star studded team with the likes of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones is being rejected and pushed away by longtime fans of the franchise because of the fact that they are girls. They use lackluster and weak excuses such as, “It ruins the original intended message,” or even dumber, “The Ghostbusters were made to be men.” But what it all boils down to is misogyny and an inability to accept change.

Men have been center stage for a very long time and women just want to a part of it. Women are incredibly underrepresented in media, where only a measly 12% of movies have female lead roles and considering this is the statistic of movies in 2014, one can imagine how low it was when the original Ghostbuster movie came out 30 years prior in 1984. This has been a growing problem in the movie industry for a very long time, where men have run the industry and used it as their own tool for no one else to use. This started a growing outrage and pushed for a huge paradigm shift in all of Hollywood. The 2016 "Ghostbusters" isn’t the first time either -- in 2014 the musical hit "Annie" found a reboot, replacing the iconic ginger orphan with an African American lead taking over the title character. People were outraged, no one wanted this and thought it ruined the iconic franchise. It is absolutely mind boggling to think that an ethnicity change would ruin a franchise, but it seems to be more of people not liking equal representation. J.K. Rowling announced a "Harry Potter" spinoff with a stage adaption that features a new Hermione who is now shown to be black. Again, people shunned it and didn’t enjoy the fact that a new group is being represented. So this isn’t an isolated case. Every time there is a change to help the representation of a group of people, the majority gets angry and completely shuns it. This obviously is not fair. Why get angry over something that you’ve had complete control over since the beginning?

In a world where people’s mindsets are constantly evolving and new strides are being made to make everyone equal, it is completely insane to think that someone will hate a movie because of the fact that the characters are women now. It is 2016 and women still can’t have a movie completely revolving around them. This doesn’t “ruin” a franchise. It actually makes it better, it broadens the audience and little girls of any color will be watching and think that they can do that too. What it boils down to is the fact that most men think the idea of a mostly female cast is taboo and different and they do not want to see that change. Ultimately, if you have a problem with the new "Ghostbusters" movie, don’t watch it. Watch your outdated 80s version and I’ll go see the new one in the movies three times.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
