Currently I'm a bartender/server, so that means I deal with people daily. Although I love my job—it's fun, it pays the bills and I work with some really fun people —sometimes the customers aren't the nicest, or people walk out or stiff you. I've worked in the customer service industry for almost five years now, so I've about seen it all...or so I thought.
One night, I was by myself and it was getting closer to closing time and I still had quite a few people in the lounge that were either drinking or playing the video poker machines. Aside from the regulars, I had these two women, who were friends, drinking and periodically walking outside to smoke who I had never really seen before.
Disclaimer: when you're playing video poker and you want your machine saved, we have these hot pink signs that will reserve it; it also lets us know that you're coming back.
They got two more beers and told me to start a tab, so I did. While I was going to get a credit card from one of the women for it, they walked outside, but signs weren't put on the machines (I had already had someone walk out earlier, and I wasn't about to let it happen again). I try to nonchalantly walk towards the back door to see if they were outside and just forgot to put a sign up, and lo and behold, there they were outside smoking. Relieved, I went back inside to finish my cleaning list, until one of them stopped me. Did I mention they were women of color? That's when it gets interesting.
She came at me in an incredibly abrasive manner acting defensive, saying I thought they walked out but if they were white, I wouldn't have questioned it. It was only because they were black. This pissed me off. She then goes on to tell me that I am a racist because I am white. Just because my skin is white, that makes me a racist. Offended, I lose all of my chill and tell her that by calling me "racist because I'm white" makes her the racist one. How can someone accuse me of being racist only because of my skin color and not think they were being racist? Seeing how her words came back and slapped her in the face, she calmed down. I then explain how it had nothing to do with the color of their skin, I would have done it to anyone, even if they were white. Embarrassed, she apologized and paid for the tab, but didn't tip me, probably out of spite, but I didn't care. The fact that I was accused of just naturally being a racist because of my skin color just had me shocked and in disbelief.
It's 2016. Why are people still racist?
