Who We Elected As Our Next President (Part 1)

On November 8th 2016 the United States elected Donald Trump as president. Thanks to a out of touch Democratic Party and a broken system called the electoral college, we have started down a road with no light to guide us. While some Americans celebrate thinking Trump will "drain the swamp" in Washington the reality is not so optimistic. I could lie and say everything will be fine and nothing major is going to happen, but that would honestly be a disservice to any reader. There is much to cover over this decision as I will address in the coming weeks. Starting today I would like to just recap who exactly we elected president and how he duped all voters that supported him.

Donald Trump was born in 1946 on June 14th the second youngest of five children. His father was a real estate developer and philanthropist who died with an estimated 250 million net worth. Being born into such privilege Donald attended the Wharton School of Business and received a Bachelor of Science in economics. Along with this education and a huge loan from his father Donald started his first business venture which eventually expanded into a Trump brand propped up by a reality TV show. Later in 1971 he took control of his fathers business and renamed it to "The Trump Organization". While Trump has never filed for personal bankruptcy he has applied six different times for several hotels and casinos. Because the businesses used Chapter 11 bankruptcy they were allowed to operate while negotiations proceeded. It is very worth noting that Trump was quoted by Newsweek in 2011 saying, "I do play with the bankruptcy laws – they’re very good for me" as a tool for trimming debt.

Trump joined the political stage around 1987 but his party affiliation before then is unknown, Trump was a supporter of Republican Ronald Reagan for United States President in the 1970's presidential election identifying himself as a Republican. Then in 1999, Trump switched to the Reform Party for three years. After running for president as a reform candidate, Trump left the party in 2001 due to the involvement of David Duke, a known white nationalist, and Pat Buchanan, a senior advisor to Richard Nixon, within the party. In 2001 to 2008, he claimed to be a Democrat but, in the 2008 election he endorsed Republican John McCain for President and officially changed his party registration to Republican in 2009. In December 2011, Trump then claimed to be an Independent but quickly returned to the Republican Party, where he made a pledge to remain.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
