Twenty-five minutes before I leave the house, I am planning out that I'm going to Walgreens and leaving with only a phone charger.
An hour later, I have a charger...and cologne, body wash and a pack of gum.
Despite this publicly displaying how great my hygiene is, it validates the idea that all of our future's are in question and changes in thought are acceptable. I'm sure we still hear that very nail-biting, mind-boggling question at every family gathering:
"What are you gonna do when you leave college?"
Don't panic. Don't hesitate. Don't fold. Answer honestly, "I don't know yet." Guess what? It's okay. It's almost impossible for you to guarantee that once you receive your Bachelor's Degree that you will be walking into a hospital grossing $80,000.
Maybe you'll get your Bachelor's Degree then take a trip to Spain or to the local police station. Circumstances change and being flexible enough to accept the decisions on your road will make you unique to those who have been followed society's standards and failed.
The path that society lays out for us is incredibly limited because not everyone can just waltz through college and waltz right into the room of opportunity. Jobs, careers and financial stability are all goals we are trained to believe show "success." Fortunately, there's more successful things in this world that don't require a W4 or monthly bill.
As a current college student, I know how hard it is to struggle with the uncertainty of our future because we're now adults and supposedly at this time of our lives we're supposed to have everything under control.
Honestly, I've never had this many things not under control and I'm okay with it because things change every second of the day, therefore promising yourself success five years from now is unrealistic.
I can barely decide what pair of shoes I want to wear before I walk out the door to go to the gas station. Do you think I'm ready to "take on the world" and get a "real job?"
Hell no.
Somebody's parents may read this and just shake their aging-heads at my attempt to influence my own, powerful generation by "technically" telling them not to do good in school and you'll be fine.
If you're that parent, never read one of my articles again please after the following paragraph.
I'm not trying to tell anyone that receiving the highest-level of education is not beneficial or going out becoming that doctor or lawyer is overrated. I am merely trying to bring light to an issue in our society, where personal success and satisfaction is looked down upon because it is not that one, specific thing that we "expected."
Lose your expectations, and wake up to the truth about our generation:
It's our way, or the highway. You can hop on or off the bandwagon but the train keeps moving wherever the conductor allows it.
