Who are you? That question to some may seem simple or it may seem complicated. The answer entails unearthing your inner being. Are you a student, a daughter, a dreamer, a teacher, a writer, an athlete? There seem to be so many answers to even the simplest questions, but often times I have trouble mustering up the words to describe who I am.
I recently heard a graduation speech that was given by Matthew McConaughey. The speech was rather long, but I found it truly inspiring. McConaughey addresses finding your true self, and answering the question, who are you?
He says that the way we find who we are is to figure out who we are not. I never thought about it that way. Think about it for a second. Who are you not? What characteristics do you not possess?
It is strange to consider that question, but with some self-exploration, we can easily answer the question.
I can say I am not a social butterfly, I am not an engineer, I am not a procrastinator, I am not a product of my mistakes, I am not a quitter. I am a teacher, I am a writer, I am an artist, I am a creator of moments that last a lifetime, I am a hard worker, I am intelligent, I am handcrafted by the Creator of the Universe, I am Catherine Parker.
I used to think that it would take a major life change, or a new start to discover who I am, but really all it takes is self-exploration and the courage to face your inner being. Stop waiting to figure out who you are. Stop allowing the world to tell you what you need to be or how you need to act. Be the person that God designed you to be. It is simple; be you.
Who I am and who you are is so much more than a list of adjectives. You are a difference maker; someone who is designed to leave a lasting imprint on the world.
