Where's The Beef?

Rape: an act no one asks for. An act that deserves real punishment.

Where's The Beef?

This past summer two well-known rapists received less than satisfactory convictions. Actually, they received the most ridiculous and frustrating punishments I can imagine.

Both men were young, well educated, white, and dare I say privileged. Both men did one of the most disgusting and unthinkable acts against another human being. Both men had solid evidence against them, found guilty of the rapes they committed, yet both men will spend no more than six months total in a jail cell.

Where's the beef?

Where is the call to action when we need it? Where is the decency of our justice system to do the right thing by their victims?

Brock Turner was caught in the horrendous act of raping a drunk girl at a party behind a dumpster. His punishment? Six months in jail with probation. He will have to register as a sex offender once he's released for his "20 minutes of action".

David Becker, another young male athlete who got off even easier. Becker raped two 18-year-old girls at a party one night, admitted to it, and claims he sent one of the girls a text to apologize. His sentence? Two years probation, no jail time, and he probably won't have to register as a sex offender. All because the judge didn't want to "ruin a young boy from having his college experience".

The judge that didn't want to ruin his college experience needs to think about his victim's college experience. Those poor women are going to be scared when they are walking to class, going home, or do anything because there is a chance they can get hurt again.

What about the girls that these men attacked? What about their lives? Their experiences? These girls will have to go on knowing that the justice system failed them and that their attacker is out there with the chance to hurt another woman.

Where's the beef?

Where's the action? When is the justice system going to stop putting privileged white men ahead of a hurt woman? What makes their rights more sacred than their victims?

Where's the beef?

When will people take rape as a serious matter. It is not something that 'boys just do'. It is a cruel and disgusting act that scars its victims for life.

When will society start teaching men not to rape, instead of telling women not to get raped. When will society teach men that no means no, instead of telling women we were asking for it?

When will society change?

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
