This year's summer blockbusters prove to be anything but uneventful. With each release trying to top its competitors, the action is more eventful. The scenes are more dramatic. The plots are more binding and twisting. The conversations are more intense. The death toll is ever-rising. However, with all of these movies, I find there is a component missing.
This summer will revisit some popular series sequels, like "The Purge: Election Year" and "Alice Through the Looking Glass," while adding some more superhero action to the mix with movies like "Suicide Squad," "X-Men Apocalypse," and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows."
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good action film. Some of my favorite movies have turned out to be those with excellent graphics and more-than-enough action. I love suspense, and I love a respectable story. However, romantic dramas and romantic comedies remain on the top of my list of favorite movies. But where have they all disappeared to?
Where are all the chick flicks?
When visiting IMDB's list of upcoming movies for this summer, only four of them fit into the romance category, with the most popular being the blockbuster "Me Before You," based on a novel by Jojo Moyes. But that is sadly it. It seems as though the sappy chick flicks and feel-good romances have disappeared from the big screens for a while.
However, although the chick flicks may be temporarily gone, they are certainly not forgotten. Many movie channels like "HBO" and "Showtime" have channels dedicated to romance or drama, which play a wide-range of those timeless, sappy classics. In addition, on-demand movie streaming services like "Netflix" have opted to bring some of the classic chick flicks like "Mean Girls" back into their lineup.
So, for those of you like me, don't get discouraged. Although this summer has not exploded with light romantic comedy or sappy romantic drama, we are not completely left in the dark. Sure, we may have to dig and search in multiple locations to find all of the movies that we love. But, all the laughter and the tears are certainly worth it in the end.
