Sleeping in is a glorious thing. We always tend to sleep in and wake up feeling like a whole new person. There’s some problems with sleeping in, though, you may have never thought about when you snooze that alarm in the morning. They may make you never want to sleep in again (well, maybe never again), but definitely not as much. Here are some things that happen when you wake up at 9 A.M.:
If you usually sleep in until 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. you could lose, on average, 45 days a year.
Yes, you read that correctly. By waking before nine in the morning rather than twelve in the afternoon, you could “gain” 45 days a year. If you live to be 80-years-old and you started sleeping in at age twelve, you will have lost about 3,094 days in your lifetime. Just by waking up before 9 A.M. you won’t lose eight and a half years of your life. Say you only sleep in on the weekends; you would lose thirteen days a year. You could travel to Europe and see two countries within thirteen days, but instead, you chose to sleep away all those days.
Sleeping more than nine hours a night means you’re 4 times more likely to die early.
Wait, that can’t be serious. This has been found true by a study completed by Dr. Melody Ding. I don’t know about you, but I want to live as long as possible. I know the infamous saying, “You only live once,” seems cheesy, but it is so true. Why sleep in if it can affect the length of your life? Even if you go to bed late, like 1 A.M., and wake before 9 A.M., you are still getting a healthy amount of sleep on both sides (over sleeping and lack of sleeping, that is).
Waking up before 9 A.M. helps you to not gain weight.
Did you read that? I hope you did because now if you had a bad week of eating but slept seven to eight hours you won’t need to worry about dieting the next week. On average, people who sleep more than nine hours a night are 21% more likely to become obese within a six year span.
Now that you see how bad it can be to over sleep, maybe you will double think pressing that snooze button.
