Almost a full year ago, my family lost our dog. He was let out before bed to do his business, per usual, and that was it. We never found him or figured out what happened to him. Some people ask what the hardest part is: actually losing him or not knowing what happened. I never really know how to respond, but I think every part of losing your pet is difficult. The truth is, knowing what happened to my Miko won't bring him back. Still, there are things I did when he was alive that I still do now, and I don't know if I'll ever stop. Can you relate?
1. Look for him/her when you get home.
Even though your pet may have passed a long time ago, you may catch yourself still assuming they'll be waiting for you when you get home.
2. Turn your head when you hear another dog barking.
I always get super embarrassed when I hear a dog with a similar bark and turn my head, only to see that it's not Miko.
3. Call his/her name until you realize what you're doing.
When I moved back home after the end of the spring semester, I called for Miko. He used to get himself stuck at the top of the stairs and bark until someone went to get him. Coming home is weird now that there's silence after we walk through the door.
4. Beg your parents for another pet.
At first I wasn't ready to fill the void. But for the several months, I've been trying to convince my parents to adopt another dog. Unfortunately, I have not been successful (yet).
5. Talk about him/her nonstop.
No matter how many years have gone by, I will always remember Miko, and I will continue to share my favorite memories of him.
