What a good day; music on, AC running, and no traffic, just cruising and reflecting on a surprisingly perfectly good day. It crossed my mind just how good the day was and how excited I was for the remainder of the evening. All of a sudden, the familiar and unwanted "dinging" noise goes off and that little red area lights up. The car needs to get off the interstate right this minute.
Something that just got fixed is unfortunately broken again. Sadly, things break all the time. We pour in money and effort and our time to fix them, and yet things fall apart and mess up. These car troubles were set to ruin my good day, and with that, my good mood.
Following that frustrating moment, I realized that things here are often times just 'glorified stuff.' We spend much of our time and our thoughts on these things that fail us and so little time on the unfailing one: everlasting, perfect, never ending. All words that we use to describe our God and King in words, but we often fail to see how He is these names in our daily lives. It was when I became utterly frustrated and upset about my car that I came to see that stuff and things are always going to fail me in some way.
They are going to mess up and break and disappoint. They are going to alter my plans and let me down. However, in the midst of this brokenness and need for repair, there is safety and freedom in something not of this earth, not merely a ‘thing’. Our Jesus came to this earth, but not so that we could put all of our focus on things here, but so that we could have everything we need in a perfect Savior.
After stopping to let my car rest, I got back on the road again and had time to reflect on what had happened and what I could do about it. Frankly, I couldn’t do anything about it, so after getting some tears out, I wanted to take that time of quietness and peace to be alone. Alone with my car, my thoughts, and more than that: my God.
I began to see how this earth is full of things that don’t last; from something simple like expiring food to something complex like a relationship. These things don’t last, but our God is not bound to our time. There is no expiration date on His love and He doesn’t need to go in the shop for repairs.
With Jesus, we are not like a car that doesn’t have the fluids it needs to run, but we have this everlasting supply given to us. The well that never runs out, this never ending supply is rooted in Jesus, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life (John 4:13-13).”
Our things will fail and break again and again, but our Creator doesn’t disappoint, doesn’t need to spend time on repairs, and doesn’t abandon us. Therefore, our hope is rooted in eternity with Him.
